Do I Really Have to Do Therapy?

Many people are reluctant to consider talking to a professional about issues. This may stem from anxiety and worry about being judged. Others may believe that asking for help is a failure because they cannot resolve their problems independently. Still, others are very private and don’t care to share what is happening with them. They are untrusting of others and would not consider sharing their most intimate secrets with another person. That said, most people who have engaged in therapy had a positive experience and felt it was worthwhile and helpful. Research also shows numerous benefits for counseling and therapy.

What are the Benefits of Therapy?

  • Awareness and Insight: Most people go through life doing their best and react and respond to situations as they arise, but they often do so unconsciously and with little understanding of how or why they do what they do. Often, these knee-jerk reactions are not healthy or helpful to our life. One of the great benefits of therapy is building awareness and insight into why you react and behave the way you do. In many instances there are underlying beliefs and drivers for our behaviors. In many cases, simply understanding and being aware allows you to make desired changes in actions and behaviors. Knowing what to be on the lookout for is half the battle.
  • Increased Coping Skills: We all do our best with what we have at our disposal and in our repertoire. Therapy is excellent for teaching new skills and strategies for dealing with stress, relationships, emotions, and conflicts. A hammer can’t fix everything; sometimes, you need more tools in your toolbox.
  • Emotional Regulation and Processing: Everyone has dealt with difficult situations, conflicts, or trauma. For most, there is an abundance of emotions tied to these events. Unfortunately, many people are ill-equipped to handle and process these emotions. They choose to ignore and stuff their feelings, which can create any number of residual and negative byproducts, from physical ailments to clinical depressions or anxieties. Therapy is designed to teach people how to systematically work through any backlog of emotions and get some resolution on the past.
  • Resolution of Mental Health Problems: Most arrive at therapy having been suffering for years with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, low self-worth, and any number of other problems. Therapy is designed to assess, diagnose, and treat countless mental health issues and give people the relief they are seeking.
  • Eliminating Distorted Thinking: Much therapy helps clients map out cognitions, beliefs, and perceptions that are distorted, extreme, or flat-out wrong. The way we see and think about ourselves, others, and the world is vital to an accurate perception of events and to making appropriate decisions and actions. The cleaner our thinking, the better we will navigate life and find inner calm.
  • Communication and Improved Relationships: Learning better and more effective communication skills is a benefit we all need. This has a direct impact on our relationships, getting our needs met, setting limits and boundaries, and finding the right people to surround ourselves with.
