Countless people live with ADHD and the difficulties that it creates. Most have been dealing with it since grade school and simply assume this is normal and how they have always been. Accordingly, they limp along through life often working 2-3 times harder than they need to. Proper evaluation and treatment could open up a whole new world and way of living.
How Do I Know if I Need ADHD Testing?
Many people with ADHD have some sense that there is a possibility that they have ADHD. It is not uncommon for friends and family to have made mention or tease them about having ADHD based on situations and scenarios that occur that could be attributed to ADHD. The most obvious conclusion that you might need ADHD testing, is by having and struggling with the symptoms of ADHD. There are a group of inattentive symptoms and a group of hyperactive and impulsive symptoms. Inattentive symptoms include being easily distracted, struggling to sustain attention, avoidance and procrastination of things that require sustained attention, difficulty with organization and follow-through of tasks, being forgetful, misplacing things, or receiving feedback from others that it doesn’t seem like you are listening. Hyperactive and impulsive symptoms include being fidgety, always on the go, trouble staying seated, feeling restless, talking too much, interrupting, blurting out answers before questions are completed, being impatient and having difficulty waiting your turn, or struggling to do leisure activities quietly. Usually having 6 or more of either set of symptoms is a problem that may warrant further investigation.
How Would ADHD be Impacting and Interfering with My Functioning?
ADHD falls on a spectrum from mild, to moderate, to severe. It is very common that those with moderate and severe symptoms are experiencing significant impact in their functioning. Those in school often find themselves struggling academically or failing classes. This could greatly impact their ability to graduate or be competitive with getting into college. ADHD can have an equal impact vocationally. Many people find themselves getting passed up for promotions, written up for continual mistakes or poor follow-through, or even getting terminated from jobs. Likewise, personal and romantic relationships can experience turmoil that stem from seeming uninterested, failing to remember important things said or promises made, appearing to lack dependability and honoring commitments, and much more. ADHD can also have financial implications. Struggling to improve one’s station in life and career can result in lower overall earnings across the working career. Additionally, issues with impulsiveness can lead to problematic spending. If you are experiencing any of these negative life impacts from ADHD symptoms, it may be time to get tested.
