There are a number of key indicators that signal you may need professional help with depression. Many people can still function with mild depression and go along hoping it will go away. Unfortunately, depression often feeds on itself and what was mild can evolve into moderate and severe depression rather quickly.

At this extreme it can be vital to take action immediately. Many with suicidal ideation need to be hospitalized for their own safety and stabilization. It’s best to error on the side of caution and go to an emergency room to be evaluated to see if you need to be admitted.

For many, depression saps all their energy and motivation to the point where they can’t go to work or school, handle basic chores, or even daily hygiene. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness are also common at this stage. They can also experience anhedonia, which is a loss of pleasure in leisure activities, such that the joy is gone, and they feel like they are just going through the motions. These are all telltale signs of needing a psychiatrist for medications or a counselor for therapy to work on the depression.

Some get aches, muscle tension, GI issues or headaches. Most people understand that the mind and body have to work together.
